PROCESS * EFFORT * ACCOUNtability * Keep at it

2/5/2019

PEAK stands for Process, Effort, Accountability, and “Keep at it”. These values can help guide us and keep us on track as we pursue getting better each day.

Process: Getting better is a journey of many steps each day, and trusting this process is key in truly reaching our potential. Understanding that it’s a process gives us complete control over doing what needs to be done right in front of us. The end goal may help motivate us, but its the commitment to the repetitive, small steps that really drives our improvement. Even when we eventually reach that end goal, it is more important “who we are” than how successful we have become.

Effort: Nothing worth having comes easy. So don’t expect shortcuts or handouts for the really good stuff. Hard work drives these pursuits, and the effort you put into learning or growing or mastering a skill can become part of who you are if you build the right habits. And only you know if you really gave it all you had. But why give less than your best effort ever? John Wooden’s definition of success is “Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to do your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.”

Accountability: To yourself and in relationships with others, this is key to being happy. Owning what you do, and being accountable to your actions is a skill, and something that we all need to strive to be good at. Saying what we want and matching our actions to those words takes a lot of maturity and commitment, but it is our choice. Actions over feelings (AOF) is accountability. Building integrity and character takes self-accountability. With both success and failure, be more accountable and grow the habit—it’s an all-the-time thing.

Keep at it: Persistence is required because it is not always a quick journey. Trusting the process requires a “keep at it” attitude when the positive feedback doesn’t come right away from the effort you put in. This doesn’t make the effort worthless, you just have to stick with it. Over time, and with persistence, your hard work always pays off and helps you become a better person. We cannot expect instant results, and we must work with persistence through adversity or moments that feel like we are standing still.

These values serve us as basketball players working to build skill and be the best player we can be as much as they serve us in all areas of life. We can get better at anything with the right mindset and drive, understanding we are responsible for our actions and choices each day.
