The following is written in Kobe’s book “The Mamba Mentality” as he discusses injuries out of his control and his mindset, and I think it pertains well to what we are going through right now.
The game is full of ebbs and flows—the good, the bad, and everything in between. With all that was going on around me, I had to figure out how to steel my mind and keep calm and centered. That’s not to say my emotions didn’t spike or drop here or there, but I was aware enough to recalibrate and bring them back level before things spiraled. I could do that in a way others couldn’t, and that was really key for me. This is life right? Ebb and flow of good and bad moments. We are in a challenging one now, and I love how Kobe says “steel my mind” and stay centered. As we grow anxious, or scared, or frustrated, or impatient in this time of unknowns and fear, we can benefit from Kobe’s lesson. Feel what you feel, be self-aware to recognize it, but stay centered and calm, knowing this won’t last forever and we will get through this. This applies to an ER doctor in New York City as well as a high school student learning to study from home without friends/sports at their disposal each day. Do your part of getting better and helping others in the mean time! What are you listening to? Who are you listening to? What are you reading? What are you watching?
Take a moment to think about what you are feeding your mind and heart. This is a reminder to fill your bucket with things that motivate you, inspire you, and make you happy. There is so much choice in front of us on where to put our eyes and ears, and it is very very hard to stay disciplined to what the right things are. Fill your bucket with the right things! A few ideas: -quality time with quality people -gratitude -good books -quiet think time -exercise -good sleep -a mentor who uplifts you -mindfulness/prayer -time outside in nature (Less TV) (Less negative people) #getbetter Let’s get better!
