With Thanksgiving Day around the corner let’s take a look at gratitude. We are much better off when we are aware of what we have rather than focusing on the things we may lack or having a victim mindset about our situation. It’s easy to fall into the “grass is always greener” trap, but we have to fight against it and recognize how good we have it. No matter what you are going through, there is always a perspective where you know others have it harder than you do, and you can reframe what is happening to you. This will empower you to make the most of what you are going through—to learn, grow, and stay tough.
When we take time to be grateful for the things in our life, we don’t take them for granted and we are able to be present in those things. When we fail to do this, we often have regrets after the fact (Example: time with family members or a time period in your life that is fleeting). How often do we approach something with “I have to do this” when we are better served with a thankful mindset of “I get to do this”? This is a mental switch that we are 100% in control of. Lastly, being grateful does not mean that you don’t want more and you don’t work to have more. Quite the opposite. Being grateful for what you already have generates an inner fulfillment that frees you up to accomplish more and serve others. It’s like a loop that, if done well, keeps you from becoming entitled but fuels you to build a better life in all the ways that are most meaningful (relationships, service, legacy). So let’s not just be thankful on Thursday as we gather with loved ones, but let’s take time daily to be grateful for where we are in life, what we have been given, and what we can learn from the things that didn’t go our way. Happy Thanksgiving. #getbetter Comments are closed.
